Teaching Coping Skills During Calm Moments

Parent and child practicing a calm breathing exercise in a cozy homeschool corner

Many parents try to teach coping skills in the middle of a meltdown. But when the nervous system is overwhelmed, the brain is not available for new learning.

Coping skills are best taught during calm moments.

That might include practicing:

  • deep breathing
  • squeezing a pillow
  • asking for a break
  • using a calm-down corner
  • naming feelings with visuals

These skills become easier to access during stress when they are rehearsed when the child feels safe.

CBT reframe for parents:
“My child should know what to do by now” becomes
“My child may still need practice when calm.”

Coping is a skill set, not a personality trait.

Skills taught during peace are easier to reach during stress.
