Why Eye Contact Should Not Be the Goal

Eye contact is often seen as a sign of attention.

But for many autistic individuals, eye contact can feel uncomfortable or overwhelming.

Rethinking Eye Contact

Forcing eye contact can increase anxiety and reduce focus.

A child can be:

• listening
• learning
• engaged

Without making eye contact.

What to Focus on Instead

Look for:

✔ engagement
✔ responsiveness
✔ understanding

These are better indicators of learning.

💛 Gentle Reminder

Connection does not require eye contact.
